Our History

Timeline of events

With roots reaching back to Roman Colchester, The George has evolved from a medieval inn to a lively coaching stop and now a restored landmark. Its surviving features and rich stories span more than 500 years.

  • AD 60

    Roman origins

    Roman remains and ashes from Queen Boudicca's legendary rampage lie preserved beneath the hotel.

  • 1494

    First recorded Inn

    First recorded as the “George and Dragon” inn in a medieval agreement.

  • 1700’s

    Coaching Inn era

    A key coaching inn on Colchester’s high street, busy with travellers.

  • 2015

    Surya Hotels era

    Surya Hotels acquires The George and begins its modern restoration.

  • 2018

    Sister property

    Surya Hotels opens the St Nicholas Hotel after it's complete refurbishment.

  • 2020

    COVID

    The George Hotel closed its doors, and underwent a ÂŁ10 million refurbishment by Surya Hotels, reopening on May 28, 2021.

  • 2021

    Hotel opens again

    The project transformed the 500-year-old, Grade-II listed building on the High Street, adding luxurious amenities, a Moroccan-style courtyard, and high-end design features.
