From royal residence to country house and conference centre, The Ridings has continually adapted. Today, as a Surya Hotels property, it blends historic character with modern comfort for today’s guests.

In 2025 the hotel was brought by Surya Hotels, a family-owned collection of distinctive UK hotels, each rooted in its location. The group focuses on warm hospitality, thoughtful design and comfortable stays, with properties ranging from historic landmarks to modern retreats

Key moments that have shaped The Ridings, from royal estate to hotel.

  • 1572–1596

    Royal visits

    Elizabeth I visits Theobalds Palace at least eight times during her reign.

  • 1607

    A king’s favourite residence

    James I exchanges Hatfield House for Theobalds, making it his country home.

  • 1625

    Death of James I

    King James I dies at Theobalds Palace, cementing its royal significance.

  • 1650

    Death of James I

    Following the Civil War, Parliament orders the palace dismantled for materials.

  • 1763

    Georgian mansion built

    Merchant George Prescott builds a new Georgian house, now the hotel’s core.

  • 1820s

    The Meux Family era

    The brewing family expands the house with Victorian wings and a tower.

  • 1929

    Change of use

    The house passes from private ownership into institutional use.

  • 1939 – 1945

    Wartime service

    Theobalds serves as a military headquarters during the Second World War.

  • 1990s

    Becomes a hotel

    The house is converted into a conference centre and hotel.

  • 2020

    Lifestyle reimagining

    The estate is reimagined as a lifestyle hotel and members’ club.

  • January 2025

    Surya Hotels acquisition

    Surya Hotels acquires the estate following Birch’s administration.

    Now operating as The Ridings Restaurant & Rooms under Surya Hotels.
